Sunday Seasons

Wondering through the garden during the early days of spring brings delight and surprise around every corner. New green is sprouting here and poking up there; some wanted and some unwanted. There is a hope of beauty with each little green sprout struggling to make it’s way through the soil stretching toward the sun.

My mind wanders to the parallels of this gardening phenomenon we know as seed germination and life. More specifically the struggle to emerge in a new season of life. Like all seeds, the primary root is sent out from a seedling before the shoot and cotyledon (initial two leaves) emerge from the soil to be seen by the gardener.

The tap root is the anchor and the early development of the root system which determines the quality and production yield for the life of the plant. Some seeds require a much sturdier root to form before emerging while others only need just enough to anchor the light weight of the initial plant leaves.

Isn’t it just like us to also feel a newness coming and stabilize ourselves in hope of what is to come? The bigger the hope, the longer we may take to ponder and prepare in an effort to ensure it proves to be stable and lasting - sending down and nurturing a tap root of confidence. No one sees it, but we know and feel the soul shift beginning to occur.

Sunlight, air, and moisture are the keys to successful seed germination. But there is one more thing needed for healthy plant life - NUTRIENTS. Soil is the medium by which the root system gains the nutrients needed to create an overall healthy plant. The Soils of Our Life - a daytime drama in the making and a musing for another day.

The garden is full of so many life lessons and it’s a place I often go to nurture those shifts and changes in my soul, preparing for what’s to come and mourning those things lost. BrightSide Gardening is here to help everyone become more confident gardener, but my hope is that your garden also helps YOU become more confident.
